Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin jest turową grą RPG należącą do znanego cyklu Monster Hunter, w którym gracz wciela się w łowcę polującego na wielkie bestie. W przeciwieństwie do większości odsłon wspomnianej serii, tytuł ten kładzie nacisk na opowiadaną historię oraz relacje z potworami.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin opowiada historię młodego łowcy z wioski Mahana, który potrafi korzystać z tzw. Kamienia Pokrewieństwa – artefaktu pozwalającego nawiązywać relację z potworami. Na początku gry wchodzi on też w posiadanie tajemniczego jaja, rzekomo skrywającego legendarną bestię zdolną zniszczyć świat. Gdy na zamieszkanej przez bohatera wyspie coraz częściej dochodzi do dziwnych zdarzeń, wyrusza on na wyprawę, w trakcie której dowie się więcej na temat swojego dziadka i jego związku z tajemniczym strażnikiem wyspy.
