Iron Harvest jest grą strategiczną osadzoną w dieselpunkowym uniwersum 1920+, stworzonym przez polskiego artystę Jakuba Różalskiego. To alternatywna wizja rzeczywistości, w której na frontach I wojny światowej można było spotkać mechy, zaś po zakończeniu globalnego konfliktu potężne maszyny wpasowały się w ludzką codzienność, stając się nieodłącznym elementem krajobrazu.
Europa została podzielona pomiędzy trzy mocarstwa, nieustannie walczące o wpływy: Imperium Saksonii, Republikę Polanii oraz Rusviet, wzorowane odpowiednio na Niemczech, Polsce oraz Rosji. Gra opowiada o próbie wywołania kolejnego wielkiego konfliktu w Europie, za czym stoją nieznane, tajemnicze siły. Fabułę poznajemy na przestrzeni trzech kampanii, osobnych dla każdego państwa.
Inspirację dla twórców Iron Harvest stanowiły między innymi gry Company of Heroes oraz Men of War. Jest to strategia czasu rzeczywistego, w której nacisk położono przede wszystkim na taktyczne działania militarne – rozbudowa bazy odgrywa tutaj drugorzędną rolę, a kluczowe znaczenie ma kierowanie jednostkami, a także przejmowanie punktów kontrolnych na mapie.
