Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) to hobbit kochający ponad wszystko spokój domowego zacisza. Niespodziewana wizyta czarodzieja Gandalfa (Ian McKellen) całkowicie odmienia jednak jego życie. Gandalf zjawia się z kompanią krasnoludów, dowodzoną przez Thorina Dębową Tarczę (Richard Armitage). Przybysze snują plany odbicia skarbu ich przodków z Samotnej Góry, której strzeże przerażający smok Smaug. Pomimo sprzeciwu hobbita, Gandalf uznaje, że będzie on idealnym uzupełnieniem kompanii. Gdy ruszają w drogę, Bilbo wciąż walczy z wątpliwościami i strachem, krasnoludy zaś nie do końca ufają nowemu towarzyszowi wędrówki. Wkrótce całą drużynę czeka zmierzenie się ze śmiertelnymi niebezpieczeństwami, muszą bowiem przemierzyć ziemie zabójczych orków i goblinów.
